What are the Big Colour Trends for 2022?

DATE: 25th Nov 2021 AUTHOR: Design Sheppard

It’s that time again when we all start making predictions regarding the colour trends for 2022. As usual there are all kinds of sources throwing their ideas and suggestions into the mix and we usually end up with a varied palette of colours that may or may not gain traction with consumers.

However, something a little strange has happened this year. It would appear that the interiors industry has reached somewhat of a consensus. We have already seen many of the paint brands making their announcements for Colour of the Year 2022 and for the most part they agree on which colour will dominate the coming year.

If you are looking to give your home a refresh and want in on the colour trends for 2022, we suggest you consider green and more precisely the calming and soothing shade that is sage green.

Benjamin Moore – October Mist 1475

Benjamin Moore has chosen October Mist 1495 as its Colour of the Year 2022. This gently shaded sage brings effortless harmony to the space and acts as a quiet anchor. It provides a beautiful backdrop that encourages individual expression through colour.

Sherwin Williams – Evergreen Fog

For Sherwin Williams, 2022 is all about heralding in new beginnings with Evergreen Fog, a nourishing and sophisticated grey-green. “Evergreen Fog inspires us to begin again and is a great choice for modern interiors and exteriors,” says Sue Wadden, director of colour marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

This calming and composed colour works in a variety of spaces from residential right through to commercial and suits all manner of design styles. The restorative and regenerative properties of this shade promote rest, relaxation and provide a warm welcome.

PPG – Olive Sprig

Healing, regrowth and resilience is the order of the day in the post-pandemic era for PPG. They have opted for Olive Sprig as their Colour of the Year 2022. This elegant, grounded, versatile and highly-adaptable grey-green is inspired by nature’s resilience and meets our need for authenticity and meaningful human connections. Olive Sprig is a relaxed but enticing green that will brighten any space with organic liveliness

Dutch Boy – Cypress Garden

This beautiful, muted olive green has been chosen by Dutch Boy as its 2022 One-Coat Color of the Year. The simplicity of Cypress Garden meets our continued need for calm and serenity in our personal spaces.

“With our 2022 One-Coat Color of the Year, it's all about helping DIYers create spaces that bring the tranquility of nature home. Inspired by nature, Cypress Garden can infuse serenity into our daily schedules with a gentle colour that embraces both warm and cool undertones in wood and accents,” says Ashley Banbury, senior colour designer for Dutch Boy Paints.

Behr – Breezeway

Breezeway is a relaxed and uplifting sea glass green that expresses peace and tranquility for forward movement. For Behr, this is the perfect Colour of the Year for 2022 as it represents the physical passageway to spiritual reemergence. This soft shade is intended to awaken the senses.

Farrow & Ball – Breakfast Room Green

Farrow and Ball actually announced a palette of five simple and familiar colours that they expect to dominate in 2022. One of those colours is indeed a green. Breakfast Room Green is a cheerful and lively green that was named after the usually east facing rooms designed for eating the first meal of the day.

Valspar – Blanched Thyme

Colour experts Valspar also struggled to narrow down their selection to just one hue so they opted for 12 trendy yet timeless colours inspired by nature to bring a calm and comfortable presence into our homes. Of course one those colours is Blanched Thyme, a cool, organic green that brings a natural and balanced look and helps us to refocus on our physical and mental well-being.

Dulux – Bright Skies

Dulux was actually one of the only paint companies not to choose green this year. Bright Skies is a light, airy and optimistic blue that opens up and revitalises the home. Inspired by the endless skies, this fresh shade of blue captures the mood of hope and optimism that is set to dominate 2022. Bright Skies is accompanied by four distinct colour palettes, one of which is Workshop and contains our trusty shade of green – Bamboo Stem.
