Have you ever noticed that when a magazine feature showcases someone’s home they never show a TV in the photos? Is it because they are hard to photograph? Or because aesthetically they just aren’t that pleasing? Or is it because they are trying to portray a lifestyle that doesn’t include TV viewing?

Whatever the reason, not having a TV isn’t the reality for most people. According to statistics from The Museum of Home, by 2019, 95% of households in the UK had at least one television set and at the start of 2020 nearly a million UK households had five or more sets. That is a lot of TVs.

Given how difficult it is to make a TV blend seamlessly into the living room, it’s no wonder that choosing a TV unit is such an important choice. Not only does it provide somewhere for your TV to live, but a TV unit can also offer the added benefit of storage for all your media equipment and accessories.

There is a lot of choice out there so it can feel very overwhelming when it comes to narrowing down the selection and finding the perfect TV unit for your home. However, we have five tips to share that will help you overcome the overwhelm and confidently find the best TV unit out there.

Scope out the Size

When it comes to choosing the correct TV unit, size is extremely important. Get this wrong and you can totally throw out the sense of proportion in the room. Ideally you want to choose a size based on the size of your TV, the amount of space you have in the room and what you intend will go next to the unit.

There are no hard and fast rules regarding the correct size on a TV unit but there are suggestions that can come in handy for providing some guidance. If you want a cleaner and more minimalist look, consider choosing a TV unit where the length is the same as the length of your TV.

You may however, want to extend the size of your TV unit to give your TV a little more space. In this case you can add 8-10cms either side of the TV and this will allow your set-up to look a little more relaxed and visually balanced.

If you are placing the TV against a long empty wall, you can choose a TV unit that is much longer than the TV and that extends well out along the wall. This allows you to make much more of a statement with your TV unit and it will also help to detract attention away from the TV. It has the added benefit of providing a larger surface area that can be used for displaying ornaments or other decorative items.

Another option if you have a large empty wall to make use of is to opt for an entertainment unit which enables you to drastically enhances your storage capabilities and makes the most of the available wall space.

Select the Right Style

Now that you have chosen the right size TV unit, you can focus in on the style that you’re looking for. You want to choose a TV Unit that compliments the existing décor in your room. SO think about the style of the overall room. Have you gone for Scandi minimalism, something more industrial, or have you opted for something a little more Cottagecore? Of course, there is no harm in mixing styles to achieve something more eclectic, but just make sure that it works with the rest of the room.

Another thing to bear in mind here is whether you want a floor standing TV unit or wall-mounted one. Wall-mounted is a great option for smaller spaces. Raising it off the ground creates the visual illusion of more space as the floor is visible. It also makes it easier to clean beneath it which is an unexpected bonus.

Settle Upon Storage

There are lots of different designs when it comes to TV Units and we’re not just talking about style here. So think about how you use the room and what you need from this piece of furniture. If you already have plenty of storage in your room, you can opt for a TV unit that is perhaps more streamlined and has open shelves. If storage is hard to come by, you may want the TV unit to work extra hard for you so that you have somewhere to store all your belongings.

Think about what you want to store in there and whether you want to access it by drawers or doors or whether it can simply sit on an open shelf or be placed inside baskets to keep it tidy. Whatever you opt for, just make such it is easily accessible.

Material Matters

Next up you need to think about what material your TV unit should be made from. There are so many options out there from wood to metal to glass, all of which come in different colour variations too. Again, there is no right answer here.

Your choice may be dictated by the style you choose. For example, if you went for something more industrial, perhaps metal is the right material. Trying to get the Scandi minimalist look? Perhaps light wood is a good option. Farmhouse chic? Maybe painted wood? It doesn’t matter what material you choose as long as it suits your style and is suitable for your needs. Glass for example may not be the best idea if you have small children.

Refine by Price

Once you have narrowed down your options according to the criteria above you can then further filter your choices by price. TV units are available at all price points so it really does depend on your budget as to which option you go with. What it really comes down to is value for money so choose wisely.

A TV unit is an important piece of furniture in the living room so take your time to make sure that you make the right choice for you and your home. Don’t let the decision overwhelm you. Simply narrow down the options according to the size, style, storage options, material and cost and you will find your perfect TV unit.
